A study companion for kids just starting Public Forum debate — between classes, at their own pace.
Debate Beginner Helper is a study companion for students (ages 8+) who are new to Public Forum (PF) debate. It helps students review and understand the specific debate materials their coach or teacher has already provided — between classes, at their own pace.
Across all of them, the AI explains and asks guiding questions — it never writes a complete argument, case, or speech for the student.
A quick guide to getting the most out of it.
It's a two-step flow — everything here is tap-a-button, no typing:
Every question in this app comes from a fixed set of buttons — there's no open text box anywhere, so nothing you'd have to type is ever sent anywhere. Tapping a button sends that specific question to the AI provider (Anthropic) to write the answer. Most are pre-generated and answered instantly from a saved file; a few may take a moment the first time. We never attach a name to any of it, and we don't store it.

A happy learning journey, built by a parent who's been there.
I'm a parent, not a tech company. I built this because I watched my own child start debate and struggle — not because he wasn't capable, but because everything felt new and a little overwhelming. I'm not a native English speaker, and I didn't grow up with debate either, so when he got stuck, I often couldn't help. I could see the frustration setting in.
Here's the thing: his coaches are wonderful, and the course materials are genuinely good. That was never the problem. The challenge is the nature of debate itself — the topics are big. Beginners are asked to wrestle with world issues like economies, laws, and international conflict. For a young child just starting out, that's genuinely intimidating, and it's easy to feel out of your depth before you've even begun.
And that early hurdle has a cost. Many promising young debaters quietly drift away after just a semester or two — not because they couldn't do it, but because they got lost in the deep end before they ever reached the fun part.
I didn't want that to be my son's story. I wanted him to feel the joy of it — the "oh, I get it now!" moment, the confidence of understanding a hard topic, the thrill of having something to say.
So I built a patient helper. One that never sighs, never rushes, never makes a kid feel slow for asking the same thing twice — a gentler study buddy than a tired parent at the end of a long day (I'll admit it 😉). Something that turns "I don't get this" into "let me try."
My hope is simple: that learning to debate can be a happy journey, not a stressful one — and that this can help other kids, and other parents like me, enjoy it together.

People sometimes ask why I didn't just send my son to a search engine, or let him ask ChatGPT or Claude directly. Here's what I ran into:
None of this makes the open internet or other AI tools bad — they're just built for anything. My son needed something built for exactly this.
A huge thank-you to Potomac Debate Academy for the course materials the Main Topics section is built on. My child has been part of their community for two years and has learned so much — I highly recommend checking out their programs if you're looking for a debate community to join.

Right now this app runs on a free, small-scale hosting plan while I see whether it's actually helpful. That means the very first page load of the day (or after a quiet stretch) can take up to a minute to wake up — after that, it's fast. Thanks for your patience!
As more families use it, or once I can see it's genuinely helping, I'll put money behind it: faster hosting so there's no wake-up delay, and a higher limit on how much the AI can be asked each day. Your feedback is what tells me it's worth doing — I'd love to hear what you think.
This app is still a pilot — your feedback shapes what happens next.
Your feedback was sent. It genuinely helps decide what to improve next — thank you for taking the time.
